Legend closed by Atari?

It seems we have to say goodbye to the Unreal 2 and Wheels of Time developer.

According to Shacknews and VE3D, Atari have shut down Legend Entertainment yesterday and the news has travelled around the World faster than a SR-71 Blackbird since. Even though there’s no official press release, yet, Legend’s home page has already been shut down.

Legend did produce excellent games. However their latest title, Unreal 2, did not sell very well. This was no fault on their own, as publisher Atari forced them to strip out the multiplayer portion (so it would not compete with Epic’s Unreal Tournament 2003) and other very cool features. Legend’s recent multiplayer add-on has been very well received, though, and according to VE3D a patch currently in development will still be released.

The Xbox port of Unreal II handled by Australian developers Tantalus will be released, though. It’s not really understandable why Atari has made this move. Their recent releases have shown, that they don’t really have a surplus of quality developers under their wings.

This news has been confirmed by Legend's Glen Dahlgren:
We're very sad to see this happen too. It was a bit of a surprise to all of us. Legend had a lot of talented people, and it's a damn shame that we won't be together to make our next game.

I'm glad to see that people remember our roots. I designed (or co-designed) Gateway I & II and Death Gate long before Wheel of Time and Unreal II, and I've got a fond place in my heart for the old adventures.

Thanks for the support.

There will be one last official XMP patch though, which will be released together with the XMP Community Bonuspack.

Sad sad news ..
