Far Cry 1.2 on its way
Warning: technobabble ahead.
At some point today CryTek should be releasing a new patch for Far Cry, which will update the justifiably lauded shooter to version 1.2. The patch will bring with it several gameplay changes, as well as improved support for nVidia’s GeForce 6800 series of graphics cards.
The latter will enable Shader Model 3.0 (GeForce 6800 is the only card to offer such hardware support) and although it won't provide any visible improvements in detail or effects it will give a boost to the frame rate in some instances. CryTek have also enabled geometry instancing, which allows complex models to built up from just a single, smaller, polygon model.
Despite all this though, benchmark testing has shown that many levels show little or no improvement in frame rate, with only small increases of between 10 and 15% on levels such as “Research” and “Volcano”.
Most of the gameplay changes are similarly minor, with the amount of time you can sprint for now lasting 30% longer and vehicle damage being adjusted for both single and multiplayer modes. There’s also been a number of changes to the way the weapons work in multiplayer mode, including a number of issues with headshot detection.
So, nothing that’s going to exactly rock the world to its foundations, but all welcome changes nevertheless.
