Spector leaves Ion Storm

Warren Spector has left Deus Ex developer Ion Storm, but will not completely sever ties with the company.

After months of rumour and speculation, game development veteran Warren Spector has left Ion Storm to "pursue personal interests outside the company" according to an Eidos spokesman. Eidos owns Ion Storm, the developer behind the Deus Ex and Thief franchises.

"Eidos announces that Warren Spector has relinquished his role as studio director at Ion Storm," said the publisher. "Warren has chosen to pursue personal interests outside the company, but he will continue to work for Eidos as an IP consultant. His insight and expertise is highly valued by Eidos, and the company looks forward to continuing its relationship with Warren in his new role."

This continued relationship is most likely overseeing Crystal Dynamics' development of the seventh Tomb Raider game. After a disastrous sixth game, Eidos took development away from Core Design and moved it to Crystal Dynamics in the hope the franchise could be rescued.

Meanwhile speculation is rife that Spector's next major role will be to head up a new development studio for Midway in Austin, Texas. Midway recently purchased Inevitable Entertainment, developer of the forthcoming Area 51, and has renamed the company Midway Studios Austin.
