Are you going to use the onboard sound?
If not and you want a good sound card and don't care about the money then an Auzentech card would be the best option since they are basically X-Fi but better and have improved drivers over the Creative cards.
If you don't want to spend quite that much then the Asus D2 isn't a bad option. The sound is very good and even though it only supports EAX 2.0 a lot of games support Doldy Digital now and the surround sound on that front is spot on.
I had a high end Creative card and "downgraded" because I just couldn't be bothered with the Creative driver problems any more.
Also I have been researching cooling in PCs and it seems the best way is one of the most simple depending on the case. With the Antec Nine Hundred you would have no need to add any other fans. Just make sure the CPU fan points to the back of the case. That way the air comes in over your HDDs, up to the CPU (crossing some of the motherboard chipsets) and straight out. Any heat rising from the graphics cards etc gets pulled out the back of the case with it.
Of course you probably knew that but if not I hope it helps. ![]()

Basicly i just to buy an allready made PC, but one of those good ones without pre-installed crap from acer (no offense to anyone who uses that crap).
intel i7 920
geforce 275
Gigabyte UD4P
6 GB DDR3 Ram
silencer PSU
etc.
all in all less than 1000 Euroes.
then i got myself a box of windows vista 64 bit home premium with a windows 7 voucher (simply just cheaper, than to buy the actual windows 7 64 bit home premium box), including free delivery of windows 7.
1100 euroes. a good PC with great opportunities to be upgraded whenever i feel like, perhaps when directx 11 generation 2 graphics cards come out ![]()

They're already out.
Well one is, and it's pretty good.

The HD 5870 is very good. I bought it as soon as I could get hold of one. The drivers are surprisingly stable and it is very quiet. It really shines at higher resolutions but it's even longer than the 4870 so beware. ![]()

im still gonna wait for the second generation as i said in my post ![]()
maybe just a bad excuse because i need some more time to save up some money...who knows ![]()

Finally placed my order ![]()
I have finally overcome my fear of AMD and ATI and bought a monster ![]()
so here's the specs:
- AMD PHENOM II 955 x4 (4x3.2ghz) 8 MB Cache (BLACK EDITION)
- 2 x HD5850 1GB DDR5 Graphics Card(XFX) (supports full Directx 11 yay )
- Gigabyte 790XT-UD4P
- 1 TB Samsung, 7200 RPM, 32 MB Cache Harddrive
- 8 GB Kingston DDR3 1333 MHZ RAM
- Antec Ninehundred cabinet
- 7.1 surround sound
- 10/100/1000MBIT NETCARD (Gigabyte speed) <- what's this
- Original AMD CPU Cooler with cobber heatpipes
- 850 Watt Gamer Powersupply (80Plus approved) <- what's this
- 10 USB 2.0 gates, of which 4 are in front
- Sony 24x SATA +/- and DVD-RAM DUALLAYER DVD burner
It's bought from a store that a lot of people told me was good, searched the internet and found only good stuff about it. They only use quality stuff in their PC's, so no cheap crap. Their motto is actually "rather 500 more now than a broken one tomorrow".
nice guarantee too
got a nice and fresh copy of windows 7 64 bit home premium waiting for it at home too ![]()

That's certainly a handsome machine. Please report back on the performance.
From what store did you purchase that?
And for how much?

Actually im from denmark, just came here to get some advice on computer parts.
I bought it off a store called:
topdata.dk
the computer costed me DKK 10.000, which is around 1.300 euroes or so, i dont know the current value of the pound, but i would guess for 1150 pounds or so.
got a lot of positive feedback from others who bought their PC from that place ![]()

That's a good setup. You should have no problem running anything out there with that.
I would advise having at least a 24 inch monitor to get the best out of it though. ![]()

When my old graphics card died because of dust (stupid mistake), i just bought a cheap new one, a 9400 GS. since then, i cant run left 4 dead or mass effect even on the lowest settings without massive framdrops.
so i decided the time was right for a new one, so i spent a bit extra this time, so i wont have to go out on the hardware market and update it all the time. the processor and the 2 graphics cards should handle whatever i feed them with for the next few years. would be nice to play mass effect 2 maxed out ![]()

Can't wait to throw my 295 in the bin. Thought it was a very poor card.

the 295 is the best there is for games supporting directx 10. but for 10.1 and 11, HD cards are better because they support the new versions, which is why i couldn't resist the offer with 2 HD 5850's !

It's not as great as you'd think. The lack of SLI and Multi-GPU support for a lot of titles means you never get the best out of the card.
Also, SLI and Multi GPU support are different. Just because a game supports SLI doesn't mean it will be suitable for a multi GPU card.

I had a multi GPU nvidia card and sold it because I hated the driver issues and lack of game support. Since I turned to ATI I have never looked back. They used to have lots of driver issues but they run well nowadays, at least for me. ![]()
I still wouldn't go multi GPU or Crossfire though.

Just for the record, it's 2 individual cards supporting crossfire and not a single card with 2 cores.

Looks like im gonna wait a loong time for those cards.

Once i get them i'll report back on performance ![]()
